This is a fantastic bowie knife marked Smith 72 King Williams. This indicates the maker, found in the London Knife Book, as William Tennison Smith, working Cutler and Razor Maker at 86 Lombard at between 1820-36 and at 72 King William St in 1840. This rare, large and early bowie knife features a lovely 5.25” fitted stag handle and triangle steel guard. The blade measures 8 7/8” and is etched on the reverse with a floral pattern and the words” ….& Marsh”, likely the retail... supplier who purchased this knife for sale in the late 1830s or early 1840. The hand forged blade features a 5.5” false edge. The guard and blade do have some wobble as the ferrule and the cap on the but are missing, with the later replaced by a simple aluminum washer. In spite of these issues, this rare and early bowie would make a great addition to any collection. The sheath is a high quality replacement, featuring a full leather frog in the military style. This fantastic piece would make a great one to use or as an addition to any collection. Please see my other items. I am no expert and I have listed these with as much detail as possible.
