A very finely worked and unusual sampler by Elizabeth Martin. Worked with 9 alphabets 17 areas of decorative stitching, crowns, numbers and other devices.
The top alphabet and numerals are unusual in design in an outlined Gothic style stitching. There is an unusual band of combined letters ct ff, fh etc.
Worked in silk thread in homespun? woven material. Set in a Victorian veneered maple frame.
Dating early-mid 19th century, circa 1820-1845.
Size... of frame approx 23in x 15.3/4in (58.5 x 40cm), size of sampler 19.1/2in x 11.7/8in (49.5 x 30cm).
Condition - sampler is very good overall with strong colours (it has probably been folded and stored and then framed at a later date), it has been laid down on an old backing material and edged with a brown cotton tape/binding. Minor losses of stitching and some losses to backing material - see photos or ask questions.
