A Victorian era Stere-Monographe Photo Viewer wooden box. A sliding slat to place an image which can be drawn forward in the box to focus the image through the glass lens.The box came along with a big lot of printed cards for viewing.I note with interest these remarkable images are actually printed illustrations not photographs whilst the degree of clarity and detail emulates early photos remarkably well.Over 90 cards all pertaining to religious matters, biblical scenes churches and t...heir interiors and I assume the Holy lands and ancient city views etc etc. Most have a title in 3 or four languages around the borders as shown, usually but not always English is included!The wooden card viewer is rather worn, off its hinge to one side and missing the catch to the latch at the front. A natural notch out of the wooden bezel that holds the lens is where a knot of wood was and is not damage. The box measures approx 21.5cm x 14cm x depth 6cm approx.
