"THE FAIRY TALES OF THE COUNTESS D'AULNOY"London. G. Routeledge & Co. 1855. First Edition. Octavo. (5.0 x 7.0) Bound in navy blue gilt decorated cloth. Binding fully recased with original cloth top panel and spine laid down on new case. New endpapers. Hinges tight and sound as would be expected. Previous owner gift inscription dated '1857' on FFEP. 12 ...steel engraved plates by John Gilbert. Overall, about very good.
The first English language translations of D'Aulnoy's fairy tales appeared in the now non-existent 1699 edition printed in London. By 1737, the collection of her tales expanded to 11 tales translated into English. Planche's much expanded translation offered here included the most of D'Aulnoy's tales translated and totalled some 22 of her tales in this 1855 edition. It is worth noting the term 'Fairy Tale' was passed into English as a result of her works. (Clute & Grant).
Nearly all of Planche's translations of classic works are collectible and sought after. This example of D'Aulnoy translated by Planche and illustrated by John Gilbert is currently unique in the commerce and quite rare in the market as NO COPIES APPEAR AT AUCTION IN THE LAST 30 YEARS. Arguably the best and rarest 19th century edition of D'Aulnoy.
It's possible the initial print run was small enough in 1855 (< 2000 copies ?) to practically guarantee 21 century rarity.
A truly rare and very collectible edition of one of the classics of folklore and fairy tales along with Charles Perrault, The Brothers Grimm, and Hans Christian Andersen.
