For sale is a very recently re-bound set of 'The Lord Of The Rings' by J.R.R Tolkien. A first Folio Society edition from 1977, re-bound in July 2019.
These books have been hand bound by Lyra's Books in a scarlet goatskin leather. Endpapers in black, red and cream have been hand made by world renowned marbler Jemma Lewis. All materials are of the finest quality and sourced from U.K suppliers.
All page edges have been sprinkled with black ink. There are scarlet marker ribbons in ea...ch book as well as black and red endbands. The front of each book has been stamped in gold with the ring inscription. The back boards are stamped in gold with Tolkien's monogram. 'Blind' frames have been hand pressed on the front and back board of each book using a hot finishing tool. The titles and author's name have been stamped in gold on each spine between five raised bands. Both sides of the raised bands have been hand tooled in gold. Leather 'joints' have been created between each endpaper - this allows the front and back boards to be opened fully without putting any stress on the first and last pages.
The books come together in a custom slipcase, covered in black cloth and lined with black suede material. The box has been made from a sturdy 3mm book board and the front edges have been curved making it a little easier to get the books out, as well as looking a little nicer than a standard square box.

Internally all three books are in fine condition with bright clean pages and no folding, tearing or staining. They look like they have never been read.
About The Binder
I am a fully trained, award-winning bookbinder based in Shropshire, U.K. I currently work full-time for a family owned binders (also multi award-winning). i was trained to hand bind books by master binder Brian Settle. In my time at the company I have, among many other things, managed a large project for the S.A.S and made books for Prince Charles and the Bamford family. Our work at the bindery is extremely varied but we generally specialise in leather bound editions, usually with luxury presentation boxes. We often make books for V.I.P's including the Royal Family and the Pope as well as producing short runs of limited edition books for small and large publishers.
Personally I have been repsonsible for providing Christopher Tolkien with his own special edition copies of his more recent titles, including 'The Fall Of Gondolin', commissioned by Harper Collins on his behalf.
Outside of work hours I make my own creations as Lyra's Books. At the end of 2017 I won the prestigious Elizabeth Soutar award for my binding of 'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman. The book is now part of the permanent collection of The National Library Of Scotland. The other copy I made is in the hands of the author who, since then, I have been lucky enough to make a couple more books for!
