The Heart Of The Antarctic, Ernest Shackleton 1909 First Edition Complete 2 Vols
Item History & Price
Full title: The Heart of the Antarctic: Being the Story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909
Author: Ernest H Shackleton
Publication: William Heinemann, London, 1909, First edition
A scarce copy of Shackleton's own account of his famous expedition to Antarctica, following Scott's "Discovery" expedition in 1902, of which Shackleton was a member, and preceding Scott's tragically fatal expedition of... 1911. Shackleton's expedition not only paved the way for Scott, but also continued the British focus on scientific study and methodical experimentation. 8vo, 25 x 20 cm, publisher’s original dark blue cloth with silver pictorial vignette and lettering on upper covers, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Vol 1 xlviii, 371; Vol 2 xv, 419 (including extensive appendices, index). Errata slip tipped in facing page 1 in Volume 2. Volume 1 has portrait frontispiece, 6 colour plates, 125 photographic plate illustrations plus 11 text illustrations (the black and white photographic plate facing page 246 appears to be missing). In Volume 2, frontispiece, 6 colour plates, 133 photographic plate illustrations (including one in rear pocket), 3 maps in rear pocket, and 38 illustrations in text.
Condition: Overall very good - large volumes which have a habit of not lasting well, this copy is used but still sound. Volume 1 has a different type of cloth but the two books are a set and were both issued by The Times Book Club (label at rear of both). Vol 1 spine is more sun faded and has tears from a previous poor repair, the rear hinge and joint are now reinforced with a cloth repair. Vol 2 rear hinge is a bit loose. Loose maps in excellent condition, plates also very good, occasional light foxing to text in both volumes, never serious. Out of 272 plates listed, one is missing in Volume 1 (facing page 246). This would appear to be a binder's error since the rest of the plates are well fixed.
A great and classic book in the Polar Exploration oeuvre.
