Content - About the Book Classic Americana Historical VintageBook - With, the publication of this book, our series of readers designed for the use ofgraded and ungraded schools, is completed. Concerning the simplicity and carefulgradation of the letter-press, a word of explanation is necessary.Itis evident, even to the casual observer, that pupils terminate their schoollife at a much earlier age now than ever before. This is due, in part, to—1.—Better methods of instruction, which advance pupils more rapidly toward thecompletion of their course of study.2.—A feverish, desire on the part of the young to commence their life-work.3.— The humble circumstances of many parents, who, consequently, need theassistance of their children in the every-day affairs of life, and take themfrom school by the time they have finished the third reader.Theaverage age at which most pupils complete the course of study in our publicschools has been ascertained to be about thirteen and a half years. From tills it is evident that many cannot bemore than ten years old.Howutterly impossible it is for pupils of such an immature age to understand orcomprehend the masterpieces of our literature, can be realized only by thoseteachers who have exhausted every expedient to accomplish such, a result.Itis needless, perhaps, to say that the authors of this series of readers, whohave had many years' experience in the school-room, have kept this fact constantlyin mind; and they confidently believe that the New National Series will befound more pleasing, interesting, and intelligible to young minds than anyothers ever issued.Ifteachers of High Schools, Seminaries, and Academies do not find that abstruseand difficult kind of literature which they desire for the most advancedpupils, let them await the appearance of " Barnes' Collegiate Reader andSpeaker, " which is in preparation and will be issued shortly.Thatthese readers may lighten the labors of the teaching fraternity every-where, and add to the pupil's interest and pleasure during the many hours of bardstudy, is the fervent wish ofJ C Pickard; Sir John Lubbock; Nathaniel Hawthorne; Mary W.
