Collation: Vol I – half title, frontispiece, title, [6], a to h (in gatherings of 4) i (gathering of 2), B to 6S (in gatherings of 4); Vol II – half title, title page [4], B to 6O (in gatherings of 4). Recently rebound in brownhalf calf leather with raised bands, gilt titles to red leather title labels, marbled boards.There is some generaltoning to paper, else a Very Good attractive set of this iconic work. Johnson's Dictionary, isamong the most influential dictionaries in the history of the English language.Until the completion ofthe Oxford English Dictionary 173 years later, Johnson's was viewed as thepre-eminent English dictionary. According to Walter Jackson Bate, theDictionary "easily ranks as one of the greatest single achievements ofscholarship, and probably the greatest ever performed by one individual wholaboured under anything like the disadvantages in a comparable length of time'.
