"All right, then, I'll go to hell.” - Huck, upon realizing he can't get himself to give Jim up.
Here we offer a true first US edition, first issue, of the classic American novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), published by Charles Webster and Company, New York, in 1885. (Twain purposely excluded the "The" from the title, as... some of Huck's adventures were already included in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.) Many first issue points are possible with various versions of the first printing, but the only ones that are present in this version are the hand-stamped second "5" in the page number on page 155 and the date. The first edition of Huck Finn did not specify print runs, so everything in the first year may be referred to as a first issue. There is a version of the calf leather binding which can be determined as a bit earlier, but that's a different form altogether. This is a very attractive first edition, densely illustrated, with ornately decorated boards, impressed with ink and gilt. This wonderful book comes with a special bonus: a full-sized modern reproduction of an actual pictorial newspaper ad from the February 27, 1885 Baltimore American advertising a reading by Twain and the novelist George Cable, known as the first modern Southern writer.
Boards are worn, especially at the top and bottom of spine and at the 4 tips, which are worn through (please see pics). Text has been re-blocked and acid-free saddles have been added over new hinges. Uninscribed endpapers; some light brown stains/foxing throughout, as is typical with this title. A gold placeholding ribbon and acid-free tissue over the frontispiece have been added. The new binding is very tight and square and the text and numerous illustrations are very bright and crisp. Measures approx. 8.75 x 6.75-inches, 366 pages. This absolutely wonderful first will make a striking centerpiece to your collection or a very special and thoughtful gift.** Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer?
