This is a vintage Chinese late Qing Dynasty (c. 1910's) brass snuff bottle we acquired from a local estate. It has two different scenes of dragons with a mask on each of its sides (see pictures 1, 3 and 5). The bottle also has a carved mother of pearl (MOP) chrysanthemum stopper cap (see picture 6). There is a carved wooden spoon for removing the snuff from within (see pictures 9 and 12). The mother of pearl carved chrysanthemum measures 3/4" in diameter (1.9 cm). The base is sig...ned with a signature stamp (see picture 8). Smoking tobacco was illegal during the Qing Dynasty but the use of snuff was allowed because the Chinese considered snuff to be a remedy for common illnesses such as colds, headaches and stomach disorders. Therefore, snuff was carried in a small bottle like other medicines.Having been in storage for over a century, with exception to minor signs of use, this snuff bottle remains in fine condition.
