Among the most prolific and successful of 19th-century illustrators. More produced over 90 illustrated works, at one time employing more than 40 woodcutters to reproduce his work. Among his most famous works are his editions of Dante's Inferno and Milton's Paradise Lost. Bound in full brown morocco with large gilt-stamped angel to front board, gilt lettering and five raised bands. Lacking blank leaf following front flyleaf. Rear joint starting slightly. Mild rubbing to boards. Very good.
