Alice in Wonderland was the third of Arthur Rackham’s famous annual Christmas gift books, and remains one of the artist’s best-loved works.
Featuring 13 beautiful colour plates – among his finest work – Rackham’s Alice was first published in 1907, the year in which the original copyright in Lewis Carroll’s book expired: the start of the post-Tenniel era proper.
Rackham’s book received mixed reviews from critics, many of whom were evidently too used to Tenniel’s drawings, and unable to accept a new interpretation. The Daily Telegraph, however, had nothing but praise: Rackham’s Alice “is not the heroine of Sir John Tenniel’s imagination; she is older and more sophisticated; but at the same time she has a tender, flickering light of imagination in her eyes, which lifts her out of the domain of the merely pretty and childish ... Mr Rackham’s inexhaustible imagination, working over and embroidering the ground-work of Tenniel’s types, has added a really wonderful wealth of uncanny, dreamlike mystery to the story ...”
This is the true first edition, first issue, of Arthur Rackham’s Alice, as described by Riall, page 77, with the advertisement for Rip Van Winkle to the reverse of the half-title page, and the advertisement for Pamela Tennant’s The Children & the Pictures at the back of the book.
A wonderful Carroll/Rackham title.
Cover, a bit rubbed/bumped, spine darkened rubbed/chipped head and tail split to the top 2 inches of the rear hinge. Contents, all 13 plates and tissue guards present. Some foxing throughout as normal with this type of paper, a few grubby marks, a couple of tiny edge tears, inner hinges still strong, neat dedication on the first blank. True Arthur Rackham 1st Edition 1st State.
