Tatro tombstone tube radio. L. Tatro, based out of Decorah, Iowa, was a small manufacturer of farm radios during the 1930's. This particular set has been converted over for AC use and features a gorgeous American Walnut cabinet, elegant soli...d wood trim, bright back lit dial and terrific performance. Because L. Tatro was such a small manufacturer it is not very often at all that you come across one of their sets. But as you can see, the design and craftsmanship certainly rivals that of the the larger manufacturers of the time. Cabinet: The American Walnut cabinet is a real 'looker'. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set. It's over sized solid wood trim, coupled with the recessed front, makes for an elegant yet unique look. The large grill certainly adds to the Art Deco appeal. If the radio isn't attractive enough, just power it up and the back lit dial comes to life with a bright ivory glow. Quite an impressive sight! This rare tombstone is sure to be the highlight of any room in the home or office you choose to display it in.Dial & Knobs: The back lit dial, although simple, is quite attractive. It features the AM scale on the top and the L. Tatro logo on the bottom. A cool half moon dial pointer is situated right in the center. The dial is back lit by a new dial lamp and lights nice and bright with an ivory glow. All letters and numbers are legible and show virtually no signs of wear. The dial glass is clear and free from any chips, breaks or cracks. The surrounding brass escutcheon adds an elegant touch. All three knobs are in perfect shape and control volume, tuning and on/off & variable tone control.Grill Cloth: The 1930’s stylegrill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a metallic gold color with a charcoal colored diamond design. This grill cloth can also bepurchased separately on our other eBay auctions. Chassis: All tubes in the 4 tube chassis were testedwith any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors werechecked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced orre-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimalperformance. Using the included copper line antenna the radio plays very well for a small 4 tube chassis. I'm able to receive all of my local AM stations with great tone and good volume.
The Cabinet’s Finish and Restoration Process: Our Radio cabinetsundergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the naturalbeauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. The original finish on this set was so well maintained we opted not to take it down to the bare wood but rather clean and blend the original finish with matching stains and sealers. We continued by top coating with Mohawk brand lacquers andtoners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished inthe factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through aprofessional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room.Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allowsthe lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sandingfollows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Ozglaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, thefinal outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster&shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready toproudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office. Antique tube radio reception can differ greatly depending on location, length of antenna, time of day and amount of interference in different areas. Many modern day appliances can also interfere with reception. This is a 75+ year old AM radio. It's reception, sound and performance should not be expected to compare to a modern radio with today's technology. Playing capability is accurately described based on my location, surroundings and hooked up to a 12’ copper line antenna. The antenna will be included with the sale but I cannot guarantee reception quality in your area. It may differ (better or worse) depending on your location, surroundings, distance from AM broadcasts in your vicinity and interference. Antique Radio Electronics, whether restored or un-restored, are by nature hazardous due to their voltage, design, age and should not be operated unattended or for great lengths at a time.
