MCM 1950s Lee Fran Black Velvet Truncated Pyramid Gilt Lucite Handbag Box Purse
Item History & Price
************************************************************************************************
The top features roses embossed on a Lucite lid in a raised filigree design and set in golden gilt.
I've seen many lucite topped purses from this era and the majority of them are curled from fluctuations in temperatures and age, but this one sits perfectly flat....
The exterior box style purse is a geometrically shaped truncated pyramid covered in black velvet on 5 sides (including the bottom). The four outer corners are showing slight wear to the velvet but overall the fabric is in perfect condition with no color fading. The handle is constructed in a black velvet exterior and a black satin interior, it tends to fall behind the purse by itself so I've fashioned a rather crude white plastic holder just to keep it's shape more asthetic, which is not attached to the purse in any way, it's just for display purposes. I will included it in the shipping package, but a clear plastic headband may do a better job at the task. The frame of the hinged lid and ball clasp closure is gold toned in color and probably brass plated since my magnet sticks to it.The inside lid has a mirror which has a grainy appearance due to a slight silver loss which is common for silver backed mirrors of this age.The interior sides and bottom are lined in black satin and in pristine condition, there's no stains and no fading present.Measurements in U.S. Inches:
****************************
4" tall not including the handle
9" tall including the handle
The bottom is apx. 7" x 4-1/4"
The lid is apx. 3-1/2" x 5"Condition: Superb - No lose threads, no rips, no holes, no funky odors, no repairs and no previous damages evident. It may have had a satin lined lid with the Lee Fran logo under the mirror or even possibly over the mirror (only basing this on my other Lee Fran purses) but I see no evidence there was anything attched there before. It looks as though the mirror may have been reglued at some point in it's past but again, I'm not positive, none of my other bags have a mirror inside. This is definitely a collectors purse meant to be put on display.
See pictures for details. The last photo was from the October 1955 issue of "Handbags & Accessories" which provided guidance for buyers on styles for the upcoming Holiday season.
The advertising features Lee Fran's corduroy truncated pyramid version. (an eBay seller is currently offering this beautiful version in the UK on eBay auction)I have several Lee Fran purses, many of them have a compact built into the lid (where you see the square outline on this one) as pictured in the 1955 Advertising.I will be listing more vintage purses, Currently I have a gorgeous vintage black velvet HL evening clutch, in pristine condition, with matching change purse in the original box.U.S. shoppers, I can also ship this first class if you choose so, just request invoice total at checkout with the request for first class shipping.I have already included that option as a more economical shipping method for international buyers, they may also request priority mail with a request of total.
