Original Description:
This is a good example of a Dutch Forestry Sword Hirschfänger which dates from the mid to late 19th Century. It is mounted with a plain slightly curved blade that measures 22 3/4 inches in length which remains in very nice condition reflecting only an old light sharpening and some minor surface staining. The blade is also well marked by the maker J. B. WITTE ZUTPHEN on the back side of the ricasso. It wears simple brass fittings with an S-shaped crossguard that dons acorn finials and ...a clam shell guard face all framing a wonderful healthy stag horn hilt that has now richly mellowed with age. The brass fitted leather scabbard remains in very nice condition as well with just a ding to the base fitting but with the leather still very healthy and the stitching and staples all tightly intact.
