1853 Prospectus Saleman’s Sample Panorama Of The Old World And The, Pinnock
Item History & Price
This is unusual, even for a salesman’s sample. One of the front end pages has a long note explaining that the book was printed by her uncle (Lyman P. Crown, Boston) the year her parents were married. She goes on to explain she was born in 1855 and her mother died in 1857. She guesses that the poetry on the blank pages in the back was probably written by her mother.
The book has an embossed hard...cover that is splitting along the spine, but it remains strong, as does the binding. The cover is slightly warped at the corners.
There is a standard title page facing a hand colored engraving, the copyright information is in the back of the title page. That’s followed by a 1 1/2 page preface, and 3 contents pages.
After the above, the book sets itself apart as a sample. On the back of the last contents page is a full “prospectus” page, which is followed by 23 hand colored engravings (printed on one side only).
After the last engraving, there are about 20 sheets of blue paper. Most are blank, but a few pages have handwritten poems (one of which was referred to in that end-page note.
The pages are a little soiled, and many have heavier than normal foxing.
The rear end-pages are marbles and intact.
The book measures 9 1/8” x 8 1/8”.
