Binding secure. Some minor wear and rubbing to covers. Some minor foxing. No other inks other than the author's inscription from the year of publication. A good copy of this military history with fascinating provenance. It is signed by the author to "Faither" (Scots dialect for 'father'). From the remainder of the inscription this copy was clearly gifted to a major figure in the regiment, possibly General Gordon Holmes Alexander MacMillan, who wrote the foreword. This would make for a remarkable association copy, given to a general of the British army from one who would later attain that rank. As a young officer during the First World War MacMillan displayed outstanding bravery and was awarded a Military Cross and two Bars. At the age of 19 and while still a second lieutenant, he was appointed acting adjutant of the 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Between the World Wars, MacMillan remained in the army, occupying posts of increasing seniority, and was colonel of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders between 1945 and 1958, so the sobriquet "Faither" and the commendation that follow, seem very fitting. The author, Maj.-Gen. Frederick Clarence Campbell Graham (1911- 1999) fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches three times. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1945. He gained the rank of Major-General in 1959. Latterly he served as Lord-Lieutenant of Essex.
