I have here for sale a book entitled THE ENGLISH LAKES by HARRIET MARTINEAU Illustrated with steel engravings, wood cuts by W J Linton, outlines of the mountains, and a MAP COLOURED GEOLOGICALLY, by John Ruthven to which is added an Appendix containing the METEOROLOGY OF THE LAKE DISTRICT; An account of its flowering plants, ferns, and mosses; AN OUTLINE OF ITS GEOLOGY AND MINEROLOGY and a table of the heights of the mountains published by Garnett of Windermere, and Whittaker &...; Co., Longman & Co., Hamilton, Adams & Co., and Simpkin & Co., London, undated, but publishers preface is dated 1858. Here we have clear, graphic, and always highly suggestive descriptions from Harriet Martineau presented together with a selection of varied and beautiful illustrations, supplemented by a series of papers on the meteorology, botany and geology of this stunning region. In addition to the colour fold-out map of the English Lakes and adjoining country there is a b/w fold-out illustration of mountains seen from Applethwaite and Keswick and mountains on the west side of Windermere. There are also 2 full-page tissue-guarded colour illustrations and 9 full-page b/w illustrations together with 45 in-text b/w illustrations.Green textured cloth boards with a gilt decorative design. Corners are rubbed and there is wear to the gilt. Gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. Top and bottom of the spine is bumped and there is wear along the spine. Foxing, yellowing and marks to some pages. Small tear to top of pp143-144 (plus illustration) and tear to the colour map. Prelims detached but all other pages are tight and the text is clear.
