DICTIONARY HISTORY & GEOGRAPHY Of JAPAN By E. PAPINOT/SCARCE 1909?
Item History & Price
A solid and attractive scarce book. Published nearly 110 years ago?, this edition is now long out of print and hard to find.
From the Preface: "This book does not intend to give more than a summary account of the principal events and names that occur in the History and Geography of Japan. Consequently, the alphabetical order has been adopted, an arrangement that will undoubtedly contribute to the use...fulness of the book. It contains but little discussion of dates and factas, as it is not meant to be a critical history. Therefore the official chronicle which assigns the year 660 B.C. as the date on which Jimmu-tenno, the first Emperor of Japan, ascended the throne, has been adopted. But, the critical study of Japanese history seems to place this event some 600 years later, and does not guarantee certainty, at least for its principal facts, beyond the VII century of our era...."
According to Wikipedia: "Jacques Edmond-Joseph Papinot (1860–1942) was a French Roman Catholic priest and missionary who was also known in Japan as Father Papino (パピノ神父 Papino-shinpu).[1] He was an architect, academic, historian, editor, Japanologist. Papinot is best known for creating an Historical and Geographical Dictionary of Japan which was first published in French in 1899. The work was published in English in 1906. Papinot was born in 1860 in Châlons-sur-Saône in France.[2] He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1886; and three months later he was sent to Japan.[2] Papinot first arrived in Japan in 1886. He taught at the Tokyo Theological Seminary for 15 years while working on his Dictionnaire japonais-français des noms principaux de l'histoire et de la géographie de Japon.[3] In 1911, he left Japan for China. He returned to France in 1920.[3]"
