Item History & Price
DESCRIPTIONThe works intention is clearly summarised by the author in the introduction. It states:'Following a history of ancient Africa, I have sought to present a summary of the principal expeditions and individual explorers that have entered the continent during the past two hundred years, together with results of the labors.'This work explores the history of western exploration in Africa from 17th to the 19th century, whose expeditionsIt is important to note this works colonial attitudes, and the racial slurs used in the work, which reflect the societal perceptions of the late 19th century. This work particular praises the explorer Henry Morton Stanley, his exploration of the Continent, and his leadership of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. Though initially welcomed home a hero, the expedition was later heavily criticised, with many believing tha it was their cattle that introduced an unknown parasite to numerous Africa territories, resulting in widespread illness.
