Crook’s exploits during the Great Sioux War of 1876 and beyond. King’s account delivers a personal and highly detailed recollection of pivotal events of the Great Sioux War, such as the Battle of the Rosebud where General Crook, leading the United States Army and its Crow and Shoshoni allies, confronted a fierce horde of Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indians led by the great warrior Crazy Horse. Crook fended off the Indian forces but elected not to press forward, a move that allowed the Indians time to regroup and may have ultimately doomed Custer and his forces at the Little Big Horn. Following the Custer Massacre, Crook led the Big Horn and Yellowstone Expeditions to successfully break up and scatter remaining Indian forces in the territory. Covering eight hundred miles in ten weeks, the campaign was a hard one on Indians and soldiers alike. Before it ended, many of the cavalrymen were walking―their horses had either died or were killed for food. The Indians had their problems, too. The earlier Rosebud and Custer fights had expended much of their ammunition, their own scorched-earth tactics had destroyed much of their grazing land, and they were pressed so hard by Crook they had little opportunity to hunt. Captain Charles A. King -- the author and adjutant of General Merritt’s Fifth Cavalry -- vividly tells the story of the campaign from the soldier’s point of view. He also covers the activities of the fifth Cavalry before joining Crook’s force, including the fight on the War Bonnet, which succeeded in turning a large group of Cheyennes back to the Red Cloud Agency and prevented their joining Sitting Bull. It was on the War Bonnet that King witnessed Buffalo Bill Cody’s famous fight with Yellow Hand, which he recounts in detail. CAMPAIGNING WITH CROOK presents an articulate and detailed picture of the dangers and privations of Indian campaigning at its toughest. Additional portions of the book include some short stories by Captain King. Contents Are: Chapter One ~ Fort Hays and the Start Chapter Two ~ The Trail and the Chase Chapter Three ~ The Fight on the War Bonnet Chapter Four ~ The March to the Big Horn Chapter Five ~ The Assembly of the B.H. and Y. Chapter Six ~ The Meet on the Rosebud Chapter Seven ~ Away to the Yellowstone Chapter Eight ~ Again on the Trail Chapter Nine ~ The Fight of the Rear Guard Chapter Ten ~ Buffalo Bill and Buffalo Chips Chapter Eleven ~ “The Chief” and the Staff Chapter Twelve ~ The Combat of Slim Buttes Chapter Thirteen ~ A Race for Rations Chapter Fourteen ~ The Black Hills Chapter Fifteen ~ Dropped Stitches Remember folks, this is an 1890 original.
