The book (Folio) is bound... in the original cloth with lettering pieces and decorated with motifs; binding is sound though discoloured, heavily at the spine, and fairly grubby with handling marks and a few minor stains, shelf wear to the bottom edge of the spine and a split at the top rear joint/spine edge; the book is slightly bowed at the centre and slightly cocked.Inside:
With decorated end papers.Occasional foxing, brown blemishes, handling marks and marks/stains to margins, all minor, the very occasional gray top margin, presumably dust and occasional faint toning to edges (text pages only).The book is complete with 50 leaves of plate, as called for, some in colours, some in photogravure, some monochrome and some duplex, all free of any rips or tears (just one with a minor marginal nick), and contains a great many black and white illustrations. The book also contains the supplement as per the publisher's note tipped in at the front. The plate indicated to be bound at page 9 is bound instead at page 11.The plate facing page 21 is detached along with its guardsheet and there are several pages straining at the gutter.Pages 19 and 20 appear to have never been bound into the book, as pagination jumps from page 18 to page 21 and is consistently numbered thereafter and a online search shows copies identically numbered. Top edge gilt.Inner hinges are a tad weak.
The book measures 30.5 cm x 22 cm and weighs 1.720kg without packaging.
