LANGUAGES Of CAPE YORK By PETER SUTTON/AUSTRALIA ABORIGINES/LINGUISTICS/1976 1ST
Item History & Price
A rare First Edition book. Published 43 years ago in Australia, this book is now long out-of-print and hard-to-find, selling for $80 or more.
From the Preface: "Most of the papers in this volume were presented during a symposium on the Aboriginal l...anguages of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Austrailia, during the 1974 Biennial Conference of the Austrailian Institute of Aboriginal studies. As a convener of the symposium I wish to acknowledge the assistance of Ms Jacquie Lambert who, as conference convener, ably carried out the bulk of the organisation, and Dr Peter Ucko, whose insistence on the precirculation of papers (among other things) helped make the symposium successful. I also wish to thank Barry Blake, Stephen Wurm and Bob Dixon, who chaired the different sessions of the Cape York symposium. Some of the original papers are not presented here, namely: Alpher on vowel umlaut in Yit-Yoront, which was discussed only in a draft form and which will be published elsewhere in a revised version as originally agreed; Klokeid on phonological dialect variation in the Western Torres Strait language, which has been withdrawn pending a reassessment; Hall on cases in Kuuk Thaayorre, which contained information mostly repeated in his paper on noun categories; and Sutton's short note on initial-dropping in the Flinders Island language, which has been withdrawn for expansion and revision in the light of further fieldwork. Another paper circulated at the symposium but not reproduced here, is one by Sutton detailing the A.I.A.S. Archive tapes which contain data on Cape York languages; it had no academic content."
