DESCRIPTIONErnest Mamboury was a renowned Swiss scholar whose works largely focused on the Byzantine structures of Istanbul, as well as other significant historic monuments in Istanbul and Ankara.A first thus copy, the first English edition of this work.Copiously illustrated throughout with in-text illustrations and folding plates and maps.Featuring copious period advertisements to the front and rear of the text, and a loosely inserted coloured folding map provided by 'Air France'.This copy also features a small pamphlet guide to 'Kariye Mosque' by Cevdet Turkay, dated 1956.
CONDITIONIn the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial front and rear board. Externally, slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Fading to spine. Slight marking to boards and spine. Front hinge strained to front advertisements, but reasonably firm. Internally, generally firmly bound, slightly strained in places. Pages age toned to edges but clean throughout. Closed tear to fore edge of front free-endpaper. Prior owner's ink inscription to title page, dated 'Apr 1957'. Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the odd page. Guide to 'Kariye Mosque' slightly age toned with the odd light spot. Prior owner's ink inscriptions to 'Kariye Mosque' guide and 'Air France' folding map. .
