Vintage Penguin Classic Profiles 2 Selected From The Yorker 1st Ed 1944 476
Item History & Price
This book is in really great condition for its age of 75 years! The cover colour is still bright but with a fair bit of foxing to the front and back and some creasing to the spine. Pages are mildly discoloured with age, binding is tight. There is a small nick out of the outside edge of the front cover. This is a typical wartime issue from Penguin in that the paper used is thinner ...than the normal used. There are also lovely examples of product advertising on the inside & back covers.
"The names of most of the ten Americans of whom "close ups" are here presented are household words wherever English is spoken. The New Yorker's breezy and, sometimes bitter biographies deal with Alexander Woollcott, the humorist; W.C. Fields, comedian, movie star, and mimic of pomposity; Raymond Gram Swing, broadcaster on international affairs and current events; Salvador Dali, surrealist painter; Anthony J. Drexel Biddle, ambassador to the exiled Governments in London; Johnny Nikanov, New York Gypsy 'King'; Clare Boothe, playwright; Ripley, of 'Believe it or not' fame; Alfred G. Vanderbilt, racehorse owner and trainer; and Mrs Marjorie Hutton Davies, millionairess and wife of America's ambassador to the USSR"
