"The Long Winter, " which was originally published in 1940, describes life in the Dakotas during a harsh winter. "Long Winter" shows daily life in an earlier age: with chapters on "Make Hay While the Sun Shines, " "An Errand to Town, " "Pa Gone to Volga, " "Alone, " "We'll Weather the Blast, " "Fall of the Year, " "October Blizzard, " "After the Storm, " "Indian Summer, " "Indian Warning, " "Three Day Blizzard, " "No Trains, " "Seed Wheat, " "Breathing Spell, " "For Daily Bread, " "Antelope!, " "Cold and Dark, " "Four Days' Blizzard, " "It Can't Beat Us, " "The Christmas Barrel, " "Christmas in May, " "The Wheat in the Wall, " "Where There's a Will, " etc. The family has to wash clothes on a rub board, heat water in an iron kettle outdoors, cook food from "scratch, " and they spend many hours knitting and sewing. The novel ends with the line: "And as they sang, the fear and the suffering of the long winter seemed to rise like a dark cloud and float away on the music. Spring had come.
