Presumed 1st Edition c1923
Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman (1836-1908) was a British statesman and Liberal Party politician who served as Prime Minister from 1905 to 1908 and Leader of the Liberal Party from 1899 to 1908. He also twice served as Secretary of State for War, in the Cabinets of Gladstone and Rosebery. He was the first First Lord of the Treasury to be officially called "...Prime Minister", the term only coming into official usage five days after he took office. He remains the only person to date to hold the positions of Prime Minister and Father of the House at the same time.
As he was never a voluminous correspondent, and in the last years of his life he seldom wrote at length on any matter that he could talk over with friends or colleagues. This biography is therefore based largely on contemporary records and a diary which briefly records his movements from the beginning of 1886 to the time of his death.
Published by Hodder & Stoughton. There is no stated date but the preface is dated August 1923 and there is an inscription dated 1926. Presumed first edition. The two volumes are uniformly bound in maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spines. They measures approx. 8 7/8" x 6 1/4" with xv and 351 pages, a frontispiece and 12 black and white illustrations in volume 1; and xiii with 444 pages, a frontispiece and 10 illustrations in volume 2.
The cases of the books are in good to very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling with a few stains on the boards. There is a circular stain from a glass on the front edge together with a water stain on part of the spine edge of the front board of volume 1 and a water stain on part of the rear spine edge of volume 2. The spine ends are bumped and the spines are slightly faded.
The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers and some foxing on the first and last few pages of both volumes. There is some scattered light foxing elsewhere within the books and the fore edge of the text blocks. There are two inscriptions dated 1926 on the front free endpaper of volume 2.
