Jesus permit thy g...racious name to standAs the first efforts of an infants handAnd while her fingers on the canvass moreEngage her tender thoughts to seek thy loveWith thy dear children let her have a partAnd write thy name thyself upon her heart
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central leaf edged plaque which contains Sarah's name and age and has a fruit bush to its left and right. There is a crown above the plaque flanked by a floral motif which have a row of four birds above and a strawberry bowl on either side. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep rose border with a rose stem in each of the four corners. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a very small, barely noticeable area of damage just above the word thy in the penultimate line of the verse. The colours of the silks are good with slight thinning to some of the gold stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah first stitched it.Measures 13" x 17 1/2"
