Original Description:
Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Elizabeth Bennett aged 10 - 1839. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a row of three floral urns with a bird on either side of the central urn and a floral motif to the side of those to its left and right, a bird above each, There is an exquisite carnation bowl beneath the central urn with an intricate floral motif to its left and right, each flanked... by a small flower basket and floral motif to the lower section and a butterfly on each side of the upper. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a deep carnation border with the following short verse beneath
Teach me to feel another's woe, to hide the faults I seeThat mercy I to others show, that mercy show to me
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge complete with entwined serpent and a lion and stag standing beneath its fruit laden branches. The lower branches of the tree have a bird perched on each side, whilst the top of the tree has a crown above with a cherub hovering on either side. Elizabeth's details and the date of 1839 are stitched on either side of the foliage of the tree with a small bird to the inside and a fruit basket beneath. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some staining running along the bottom edge. There are also a few small areas of damage, the largest being around the central floral urn in the top section which has resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. This has also happened to a lesser degree on other areas. The sampler is behind what is presumably its original hand blown glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original mahogany frame with ebonised slip. The frame has the odd scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age whilst the slip has some areas of paint loss. Measures 12 1/4" x 15 1/4" (sight size) and 16 1/4" x 19 1/4" including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
