Hand spun, hand woven sheep’s wool manta, tightly spun and woven. Color patterns are reversed on back of textile.Constructed of two wide panels; Joined by hand with decorative colored woolen thread at midline.
Warp stripes of plain color in wide & narrow bands; Supplementary weft brocade decorative motifs at outer edge of each of the panels. Decorative hand (or machine) stitched floral mot...ifs in white cotton: These line three quarters of the length of one of the two outer panels of woven motifs. All 4 edges beautifully hand finished with woven border: Outer 1.00” of edge of panel with wider decorative band appears to be of double thickness.Dyes & Colors: Appear to be all natural dyes. Some traditional Andean color sources:Naturally colored wool: White, cream, brown, gray, black.
Insect & Plant materials: Red (Chochinilla insect ); Orange (“Q’ala Q’ala plant, also Q’olle plant mixed with Cochinilla); Pink (“Cocoye or Quchinillay Lulpla plant); Purple (Awaypili plant, also Qeto Queto plant); Blue (Indigo); Green (Chacall plant, also Cchillca plant); Brown (Monte Guanaco plant); Black (Q’eswa plant, also T’ika plant). Colors in this item: Predominately Brown, grey, red, maroon, white, black, orange, lavender, light maroon or purple, yellow-gold, pink, greenish-grey.Motif: Bands & Stripes: Broad weft bands represent agricultural fields; Thin weft stripes represent agricultural rows; Brown color pays homage to a fertile mother earth. Mountain (“Apu” in Qeuchua): zig-zag design motifs; Revered almost above all other things of the natural world, offerings of coca leaves and corn were made to the “Apu” “Llama Eye.” Diamond lozenge with central hexagonal “eye.” The llama is important in Andean culture. In Peru during the festival of “Inti Raymi” in June each year, a llama was sacrificed to the Father Sun God Inti to insure health and prosperity for the new year.
