Original Description:
A lovely solid Oak Bible or Candle Box with carved Lozenge decoration to lid and 4 sides. Made as a quality piece, given the grain and construction with all joints fitted together with dowel and pegs. 
The construction is early to mid 1700s so this is a piece which has survived for 250 plus years. 
Dimensions are  48.5 cms Tall with Top Lid being 30.5 x 29.5 cms
Very nice historic box that has the versatility to use as a sewing or knitting box to make it a ...really great functional piece. 
Wax polished finish. There are clearly signs of age and historic usage. The original 17th century hinges have been replaced and although one of the hinges has been broken, the lid is secure and functions well. 
I can well imagine that this box was made by a local craftsman for a well to do lady and could have used the box for needlework, crochet etc which was a popular past time.
