Three blue and white Chinese porcelain plates, decorated with aster patterns, Kangxi period, c. 1700 (#2) Description:On offer is this group of three Chinese porcelain plates, hand decorated under glaze in blue on milky white. The decoration shows a continuous pattern of stylized chrysanthemums, known in Europe as the 'Aster Pattern'. The chrysanthemum (chü) is seen as a symbol of autumn and of cheerfulness. This flower may also symbolize a solitary existence. This set consists of... three plates, near matching. These measure 214-220 mm across (ca. 8 3/8 inches). Two plates have a simple back side decoration of garlands. All are unmarked.Condition: 1 plate is in absolute perfect condition, without chips, cracks, damages or repairs, producing a crystal clear sound when tapped by finger nails. One plate has a very faint rim hairline and two rim fleabites. The third plate has two rim hairlines. All in all this set displays very nicely. Please view the pictures, which give a good impresssion of the quality and the condition of this group of early plates. These items were made in China around the year 1700. The pattern indicates that these were made during the Kangxi (Kang Hsi) period (1662-1722). Many Chinese products were exported to the Middle East and Europe. Oriental porcelain was imported to The Netherlands by the Dutch East Indies Company (V.O.C.), which had commercial privileges to China and Japan. Although manufactured to be used as table ware, most of this Oriental porcelain was displayed in special China cabinets in distinguished houses. This group originates from a private Dutch collection. According to the reference books similar plates can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, The Topkapi Museum of Istanbul, and the Musee Guimet in Paris. I guarantee age (c. 1700) and authenticity (Kangxi period) of these wonderful collector's items. Please view my other auction for a similar group of three plates. Buying both groups will save on shipping costs. Please note that the display stands, visible on some pictures, are not included is this auction.
