This is an extremely nice French Model 1822 Infantry Officer's Sword- a style that was extensively copied by Confederate sword makers, as well as Union, and itself was carried by officers on both sides. This is a superb example, being tight, strong, extremely well-balanced, and in great condition, although it is missing its scabbard. It has a beautiful grip, with single strand wire over polished wood, and a plain, bright blade, which has engraved on the back: "Mre Impale de Chat...t Jany 1857-SO delagarde Mle 1854." I believe this translates as the sword being made at the Imperial Factory at Chattelerault, to order of the Imperial Guard Model of 1854. Both the blade and the hilt have proofs and inspector's stamps. The hilt is beautiful, with a nice, even patina. There is very minor staining on the blade, but it is generally bright and clean. There are a few tiny flea bite nicks along the edge towards the point. The overall length is 36 inches. The blade is 30 inches. Payment needs to be made within three days of the end of the auction.
