The classic Olivetti Lettera 22 was designed by Marcello Nizzoli in 1949. This machine is small and lightweight, yet solid an durable. The Lettera 22 has a 'basket shift' mechanism which allows a smoother typing experience since only the 'basket' of type bars moves up and down. Most typewriters of this size have the 'carriage shift' meaning that the whole roller (platen) with the paper and all moves up and down, often with a clunk. It was awarded the Compasso d'oro prize in 1954. In 19...59 the Illinois Institute of Technology chose the Lettera 22 as the best design product of the last 100 years. #633072 10 pitch Olivetti Distinctive Pica type font. Vintage - 1955. This machine has been completely disassembled and detail cleaned. Worn parts replaced, and adjustments made. The Platen has been reconditioned for longer life and better paper grip and imprinting. It has been tested and is in excellent working condition (see type sample) It comes with original tote bag case (minor repairs have been made to this as well to insure full functionality) and a fresh ribbon installed. I usually repaint the typewriters I work on, except when they are in as great shape as this one. It is an excellent example of its kind from this time period.
