* Moses Hull(18...36-1906) was prominent American Spiritualist lecturer and teacher bornin Waldo, Ohio, in 1836. As an adoloscent, he joinedthe Church of the United Brethren, a Methodist branch serving primarilyGerman-Americans. He seemed destined to be a Brethren minister, but along theway became interested in Adventism, and joined the newly formed Seventh-dayAdventist Church (organized in 1865). In his interaction with an Adventistminister over doubts about life after death, he was led to Spiritualism, and there he found hishome. For the last quarter of a century of his life he was a dedicatedSpiritualist, specifically ChristianSpiritualism, which saw spirit communication as theculmination of Christianity. He gained prominence in the movement for a seriesof debates with ministers, the outcome of which was evident in that thespiritualists rather than the ministers had the transcripts published.Christian Spiritualism was opposed to many of the Spiritualism movement's leaders whoeschewed any connection with Western religious traditions. He used his priortraining among the Brethren and Adventists to teach the Bible from a Spiritualist perspective andargued that many events in the Bible, such as the appearance of the long-deadMoses and Elijah with Jesus at the Transfiguration, should be interpreted in aSpiritualist context. Though not a medium himself, Hull became a forceful oratorin the Spiritualist cause and is remembered for two debates he held withorthodox Christian ministers, Jamieson-Hull Debate and the Hull-CovertDebate. He alsoauthored The Encyclopedia of Biblical Spiritualism (2 vols., 1895). Hull also became identified largely with Victoria Woodhull and thewomen's rights wing of the movement, which launched the EqualRights Party campaign in 1872. Later, he became anational leader of the Greenback-LaborParty and various attempts to secure more rights forthe farmers, the workers and women. Late in life, he ran for Congress in 1906on the ticket of the SocialistParty, and died in January 1907. * Biographical information taken fromencyclopedia.com and Wikipedia
