1826 American Law - James Kent -. A very scarce and important text in the history of legal interpretation. Volume 1 only. Old rag paper is in very good condition. Many margin note's made by HUNT, Theodore Gaillard, (1805 - 1893) and the book is also signed by him ( see Photos): There is a split on the front cover on the lower bottom but the covers is solid and securely attached. corners are bumped with some boards showing.Leather Hardcover. First Edition. 1826. vi... + 508pp. Bound in full brown leather faded gilt lettering on the spine. chipped spine ends. Hinges are starting to crack but still good, the text block is sturdy. Pages are a bit foxed, with old damp staining visible on the interminal pages. Previous owner name "Theodore Gaillard Hunt, 1830" at top of preface, with neat marginalia in the same script throughout. Hunt was a Louisiana congressman and judge, as well as a brigadier general in the Confederate army during the Civil War. Unrelated previous owner bookplate on the front pastedown.

HUNT, Theodore Gaillard, (nephew of John Gaillard and uncle of Carleton Hunt), a Representative from Louisiana; born in Charleston, S.C., October 23, 1805; completed preparatory studies; was graduated from the law department of Columbia College, New York City; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Charleston, S.C.; moved to New Orleans, La., about 1830; district attorney for New Orleans; member of the State house of representatives from 1837 until his election to Congress; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1855); judge of the first Louisiana district (then the criminal court of New Orleans) in 1859; colonel of the Fifth Louisiana Regiment, Confederate Army, in 1861 and 1862; appointed by Governor Allen adjutant general of Louisiana with the rank of brigadier general and remained in active service until the close of the Civil War; died in New Orleans, La., November 15, 1893; interment in Metairie Cemetery.
