RARE EARLY HEATH CERAMICS SEA & SAND COMBED STUDIO VASE C. 1948You are bidding on an extremely rare and early signed Heath Pottery Sea & Sand studio vase with a hand-combed surface and glazing c. 1948. I have seen only one other Heath Sea & Sand studio vase in my 30 years of avid collecting. The museum-quality vase is of impressive size and technique, featuring a hand-combed semi-gloss and heavily speckled “Sand” exterior with a rich high-gloss “Sea” interior. The hand-combed s...urface and basket form is reminiscent of California Native American basketry, possibly produced for exhibition purposes. This piece is not commercial Heath Ceramics dinnerware, but is a studio vase made for exhibition. In fact, this is not a commercial form meant for production. This is the only example of this form and glaze combination I have ever encountered. The vase measures 6.5” high with a 7.5” diameter at the shoulder. The vessel is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. It is signed with the early Heath & Teacup mark. The vase exhibits an incredible amount of handwork including the deeply hand-combed exterior.Studio vases by Heath Ceramics are extremely rare and almost never appear on the market as most of them are already in private and museum collections. This unique and important Heath Pottery vase will find favor with collectors of Studio masters such as Otto and Gertrud Natzler, Marguerite Wildenhain, Vivika and Otto Heino, Bea Wood, Glen Lukens, Antonio Prieto and Peter Voulkos.International buyers are welcome but must request permission to bid prior to bidding.
