IT may be more often than is generally known that a petty o...fficer in his Majesty's Navy keeps a private log; it may be seldom that such a log sees daylight in the form of print; but it is approaching a unique occurrence when such a log is published in book form, and records in considerable detail a complete story of an eclipse expedition.
A contemporary account of the 1910-1912 commission of the cruiser HMS ENCOUNTER (Captain Philip Howard Colomb), written by one of her petty officers. ENCOUNTER was built in 1902 and the author joined the ship at Colombo, having come out from England in HMS HAWKE. The cruiser sailed for the Australian station during which she visited New Zealand, took part in torpedo and battle practice, learns of the death of King Edward VII, photographs an eclipse of the sun, receives news of the sinking of the TITANIC, (which shocked and cast gloom upon all on board), etc. The book records the everyday routine and sporting activities of her ships’ company and various highlights of the commission. ENCOUNTER was later transferred to the young Royal Australian Navy and re-named PENGUIN. She was scuttled off Sydney in 1932.
