From the Dust Jacket: "From Sail to Steam, is not primarily a biography of Antonio Jacobsen. It is an attempt to give a brief outline of his life and career and an exposition of his developing work. The book illustrates in full color the entire collection of 24 Antonio Jacobsen marine paintings assembled by W.W. Sullivan, covering the entire span of the artist's work from 1873 to 1920. There are examples of sailing ships, transition steam-and-sail vessels and steamships. Included is a check list of Antonio Jacobsen paintings in private and public collections. Anita Jacobsen has been active in the field of fine arts and antiques for almost four decades and has been writing about them since 1942. Her interest in Antonio Jacobsen began many years ago when she met two of his children: his daughter, Helen and a son, Alphonse. The author visited with Mr. Jacobsen many times in his home before his death in 1962 and is indebted to him for the biographical material about his father in this work."
According to Wikipedia: "Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark where he attended the Royal Academy of Design before heading across the Atlantic Ocean.[1] He arrived in the United States in August 1873.[2] He settled in West Hoboken, New Jersey (now Union City, New Jersey), across the Hudson River from Manhattan and New York Harbor, its port filled with ships from America and around the world.[3] Jacobsen got his start painting pictures of ships on safes, and as his reputation grew, he was asked to do portraits of ships by their owners, captains and crew members, with many of his works sold for five dollars.Jacobsen painted more than 6, 000 portraits of sail and steam vessels, making him "the most prolific of marine artists".[4] Many of his commissions came from sea captains, and Jacobsen was chosen both for the accuracy of his work and his low fee..."-------------------------------
