The State of the Dead and the Destiny of the Wicked by Uriah Smith. 1873 Rare vintage book. Published by Steam Press of the Seventh-Day Adventist Publishing Association, Battle Creek, Michigan. 294 pages. Measures approximately 4.5" x 7" x .75"
This appears to me to be a first edition, but I did not want to fully list it as such without being certain. It was difficult to research since it is such a rare book to find in it's original (non-facsimile)... format. From what I could find, it looks as though 2 formats of this title were put out in the year 1873 (original publication year) by the same publisher (Steam Press). There was my book, which I believe was a paperback edition, and then there was what appears to be a somewhat smaller cloth binding edition with 368 pages. I have only been able to find the other copy for sale online, and even then I could only find one. I actually could not find my format even in library archives. Both formats are nearly identical apart from size and therefore obviously number of words per page. I imagine the paperback edition is so rare due to not having a protective binding to protect it.
It is obvious from the pictures that this book is very fragile. The covers are separated from the text block and the edges of the covers and the pages are cracked/chipped. There is no spine. The book needs to be re-threaded/rebound. Some pages are still connected simply due to the habit of being next to each other for the past 146 years, but separate rather easily if the pages aren't turned carefully enough. There are no missing pages and I only found one page with what appears to be a stray pencil marking (see photo), otherwise I saw no writing or highlighting. There is obvious age toning.
