A good mid-19th century sarcophagus shaped mahogany veneered tea caddy with original glass mixing bowl and original lock and key.
The brass hinged lid opens to reveal a centrally located, very pretty glass mixing bowl with foliate decoration and star cut base (small chip to rim of base). On either side are the mahogany lidded containers that have small turned ebony knobs. The interior of the mixing bowl reservoir has a claret coloured waxed pa...per lining with a foliate decoration. This matches the interior lining of the lid. Interestingly, the interiors of the containers and the underside of the lids, have still their original lining intact, which appears to be lead foil, as opposed to the later Victorian caddies that were aluminium foil lined, which nearly always disintegrate to there only being a few remnants remaining. It has a circular brass escutcheon and sits on four wooden bun feet. The base has its original waxed green sugar paper lining which is slightly worn but stable, and so I haven't re-lined it, as it is part of its charm.
It has been sympathetically cleaned, re-waxed and polished and is in excellent original condition.
Measurements: 28 cm wide, 15 cm deep and 16 cm high.
After care:
Cleanedand restored to a high standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to time. You can occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains beeswax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Pleasedon’t use a silicone spray asthis could be detrimental to the waxedsurface.
