SNOOKUMS:The newspaper comic strip titled The Newlyweds is considered thefirst comic strip to focus on family life in America.  Createdin 1904 by George McManus and published in Joseph Pulitzer's New YorkWorld, the strip centered around an elegant, attractive & upscaleyoung couple. 3 years into the strip this beautiful couple gave birthto a baby boy with no name except they called it affectionately“Snookums.” The family unit was now complete. There was aproblem: the gorgeous mother had produced a hideous child, theugliest child imaginable. William Randolph Hearst, publisher of TheNew York American, was very fond of poaching successful comic stripsfrom rival newspapers & he wasted no time inviting McManus tojoin his staff & in 1912 McManus left the World to join theAmerican. McManus continued The Newlyweds strip under a new name -Their Only Child - since creators were allowed to take theircharacters with them if they changed the name of the strip. In 1913McManus began the comic strip that would bring him national fame &make him a very wealthy man – Bringing Up Father. Collectors oftenrefer to the strip as if it was named for its lead characters, Maggie& Jiggs. The strip ran for 87 years. At various times during itslong run Their Only Child ran as a “topper” to Bringing UpFather. A “topper” was a short comic strip that appeared onSundays above the main feature. McManus once had a character climbdown from the topper & enter the 1st panel of the Sunday featuredstrip where he would remain for many years. At some point McManuslost interest in Their Only Child & it fell by the wayside in1916 allowing him to concentrate on the hugely successful Bringing UpFather. 25 years later (1941) McManus brought back Their Only Childnow renamed Snookums & it continued until 1956 as a topper only. His looks never improved & Snookums remained the ugliest child inAmerica.
Merchandisingof Snookums was limited with the largest number of collectibles beingproduced by the German maker of decorative figurines & highquality porcelain, Schafer Vater. There were also some books of comicstrip reprints, a few dolls & at least 3 different hand paintedtin wind-up toys made in Germany circa 1915. In 1910 Sears Roebuckbegan importing & distributing the Schafer Vater line in the US.It is likely that the Snookums figures were some of the first SchaferVater pieces available. The company also produced an even moresuccessful line of character figurines, the Rose O'Neil Kewpies, beginning in 1912. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________NEXT, THE IMPORTANT STUFF:*****************************IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ.
