Studio Anne Carlton, SAC chess set, War Of Religion. Established in Yorkshire, UK in 1969, this is one of SAC’s earlier sets and it seems only a scarce few remain. All pieces are hand-produced and finished in a traditional brown and cream appearance with painstaking detail. The tallest piece measures 5.25”. An adequate description of this set calls for some background. This set replicates the point in British history when Hen...ry VIII made his dramatic departure from the Catholic Church when they refused to annul his marriage to Catherine because she had many miscarriages and had not borne him a son. Following his departure from the church, he declared himself head of the Church of England, God's representative on Earth. He divorced Catherine and then set about to marry his mistress, Anne Boleyn, in hopes of producing a son. Henry VIII became increasingly barbaric, his reign marked by the sheer volume of killings ordered under his rule; of anyone who questioned the purity of his motives.
The chess set on the dark side is of the people in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, the Pope, Mary, the Pope’s council and others. The light side has quite the cast of characters. Henry VIII as King, the double headed queen represents the two wives he ordered beheaded, the pawns are the monks of England. The characters on the light side also include some who represent the goons who carried out the beheadings at the behest of Henry VIII, a man sitting on a person; an executioner and other representatives of the time. The chess pieces are made of crushed stone and resin. The set is in very good vintage condition with two pieces having small chips out. Check photos.
