Vintage Strato metal bank manufactured by Duro Pattern & Mold Co. of Highland Park (Detroit), Michigan. The base design was originally patented in 1953, which was then modified beginning in 1961 with the addition of the commemorative ring around the bank's moon (Celebrating Alan Shepard, first American in space). The ring around the moon of this model celebrates the triple earth orbit of John Glenn on February 20th, 1962 on its top side. The bottom side lists six of the seven ...Mercury astronauts: Shepard, Grissom, Glenn Carpenter, Schirra, and Cooper. Slayton is missing because he never flew in that program due to a heart condition. The bank is in pretty good shape for its age- normal scuffs, scratches etc. and the coin shooting mechanism still functions. The bank advertising decal has only one flea bite nick in it and the hatch is still on the bottom (I don't have the key). The best part is the metallic light purple or lavender color, and it looks great with the metallic green ring. This is only the second one of this color I have ever seen so it must be uncommon. Size: about 8.5" long, 3.5" high, and 3.25" wide.
