Antique Vintage William Gerke Tailpiece for August Pollmann Mandoline Banjo. Condition is Used. This Antique Tailpiece for an August Pollmann Mandoline Banjo has stamped lettering which says: WM. GERKE PROV. R.I. PAT’D. JAN. 31, 1888. The tailpiece has five slots for the strings and is made of cast nickel-plated brass and some of the plating is missing from wear or corrosion. I do not have an original screw to mount it with, but an old&n...bsp;slotted screw would be appropriate. The Pollmann banjo mandolins have a five string banjo style neck paired with a teardrop shaped "mandolin" body with an approx. 10" bout. Although the mandoline banjos were made in mahogany and rosewood (and perhaps other woods) and had different sorts of bindings, pick guards, and inlays - to my knowledge they all came with Gerke tailpieces of which this is one. August Pollmann was an instrument distributor in the 1890's and his catalog included regular five-string banjos, mandoline guitars, and mandoline-banjos. The banjo mandolin instruments were believed to have been made for Pollmann by Pehr Anderberg, a Swedish-born guitar maker. For a Pollmann banjo mandolin owner this tailpiece could be the final ingredient needed to make it complete, and these tailpieces are extremely difficult to find as parts.Shipping cost will be $8.00 to anywhere in the United States.
