Well this is just a superb face jug! I used to work for a potter and I grew up in Asheville knowing about Browns Pottery in Arden. I visited there with my Mom 30 some years ago and had a nice visit with Charlie. I am a collector of Southern face jugs, I went to as many of Burlon Craig’s openings as I could in spite of living in Ohio. Before I left Browns, Charlie said I should have one of his Dad’s face jugs, so I ordered this one by special order. It was finished in 1989 and is wo...nderful. The brown glaze has a darker drip effect, almost greenish as it drips down past the ear. The eyes, mouth and mustache are etched with a darker brown-black for added detail. The eyes are raised with applied irises. The cheeks are indented for shape. It is 14” tall and about 8” wide, large enough to hold 2 or 3 gallons of liquid. On the bottom Mr. Brown signed it “Browns Pottery Arden, NC, L-89”On another eBay listing someone posted that the pottery was closing but I couldn’t corroborate that. If true, that would really be a shame. There have been Brown potters for centuries passing their knowledge down from one family member to another. It is one of the South’s most significant pottery making families. The pottery in Arden has been there since 1925. Louis was born March 27, 1924 and passed away May 2, 2002.
