Antique Late 17th Century Dutch? Large Brass Ornate Mortar & Pestle
Item History & Price

I recently purchased at an estate sale. Quoted below is the description written on a note placed inside this vessel. I am not an expert but will say this estate included many very special items and generally the entire estate was very high end. It has obviously been well used, with wear and some dings and pitting, and has a fabulous light patina from age. It is surprisingly heav...y, weighing over 4.5 lbs.
Per seller at the estate where I purchased: "This distinctive mortar and pestle is believed to have been made in the late 17th century, likely 1695, and is possibly Dutch in origin, although the discernible lettering on the mortar is a Latin inscription. Both mortar and pestle are made of solid brass. The mortar is 4 1/4" tall with a mouth diameter of 4 5/8" and the pestle is 7 1/2" long. It has dual handles, one on each side, and has 3 bands of embossed decoration, the majority of which are hard to identify. The middle band has a shield motif flanked by two figures on one side and a central object flanked by two matching figures on the opposite side. The upper and lower bands feature letters and numbers; the upper band has an undecipherable phrase on one side and a "1, " an object place-holder, a "5" and another object place-holder, and "95" which I am interpreting as a date (1/5/1695). The band at the foot bears the Latin inscription "Pes Mea Deos, " which translates to "the foot of my God."
