Very rare and important, 1863 Currier & Ives, Hand Colored Stone Lithograph depicting Union and Confederate forces at the Battle of Chancellorsville during the Civil War. This wonderful Civil War Battle Scene lithograph measures approx. 13 1/2" by 9 1/2” including visible margins on all sides (size of image area measures approx. 12 1/4" by 8").
The Image is fully titled: "Battle of Chancellorsville, Va, May 3rd 1863" and subtitled "This terrific Battle wa...s fought between the "Army of the Potomac" under Genl. Hooker; and the Rebel Army, under command of Generals Lee, 'Stonewall' Jackson, Longstreet and Hill. The Rebels advanced in overwhelming numbers, but the brave Union Soldiers fought with desperate gallantry, holding the Rebels in check, and inflicting dreadful slaughter among them".
Depicted is close, hand to hand combat between massive forces of Union and Confederate troops. Dead and dying soldiers populate the foreground and there is an American Flag visible at the right and a Confederate National Flag at the right. The mass of Union forces appear to be taking a more aggressive position and advancing but the Confederate forces are certainly holding their own.
While this Image does not accurately portray any portion of the Battle of Chancellorsville, its importance lies in its stature as both a means of conveying the "news" of the Battle in pictorial form and as a propaganda device to promote confidence and support for the "cause" among the population of the North.
The Civil War Battle Scene Lithographs of Currier & Ives were published almost immediately after significant Battles and although newspapers reported the outcomes of Battles, it was the illustrations in Harper's Weekly and the Lithographs of Currier & Ives that delivered the "pictures" to the people in this time before "battle photography".
The Lithograph carries the mark of the Lithographers - Currier & Ives - and although it is not dated it was most certainly published in late May of 1863.
This rare and fascinating, 1863 Civil War subject, hand colored, stone lithograph is in excellent condition. The Sheet is clean and crisp and the colors bright and vibrant with no significant soiling, staining, physical damage or repairs of any kind. There is a single small spot of foxing in the upper margin and some very light and uniform age toning. While we have not examined the Lithograph out of the frame, there are significant visible margins on all edges. Overall this original Currier & Ives, Civil War Battle scene is well preserved and displays beautifully.
