Original Description:
Very rare and important, 1862 Currier & Ives, Hand Colored Stone Lithograph depicting Union and Confederate forces at the Battle of Shiloh (Battle of Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee) during the Civil War. This wonderful Civil War Battle Scene lithograph measures approx. 14" by 10” including visible margins on all sides (margins measure approx 3/4” on each edge).
The Image is fully titled: "The Battle of Pittsburg, Tenn. April 7th, 1862" and subtitled “Th...is plate represents the moment, when the heroic Genl. Grant rode to the left of the field, and placing himself at the head of a column, ordered a charge on the enemy, himself leading, while cannon-balls were falling like hail around him. His men followed with a shout and in the tremendous shock of arms that ensued, completely routed the Rebels, although they were commanded by their best and bravest Generals Johnston and Beauregard."
Depicted are a sea of Union forces charging toward an equally massive Confederate army with General Ulysses S. Grant on horseback in the foreground urging his army to the attack. Here Currier & Ives theatrically staged the composition of this print by framing a fallen soldier and his horse with three Union officers. In the background, the battle rages and smoke fills the air.
The two-day battle at Pittsburg Landing in Tennessee (also referred to as the Battle of Shiloh) occurred on April 6 and 7, 1862. The encounter involved about 65, 000 Union and 44, 000 Confederate troops. It resulted in nearly 24, 000 killed, wounded and missing. The battle proved to be a decisive victory for the Union forces when they advanced on and seized control of the Confederate railway system at Corinth, Mississippi. The tragic losses of the battle were dramatic
While this Image does not accurately portray any portion of the Battle of Shiloh, its importance lies in its stature as both a means of conveying the "news" of the Battle in pictorial form and as a propaganda device to promote confidence and support for the "cause" among the population of the North.
The Civil War Battle Scene Lithographs of Currier & Ives were published almost immediately after significant Battles and although newspapers reported the outcomes of Battles, it was the illustrations in Harper's Weekly and the Lithographs of Currier & Ives that delivered the "pictures" to the people in this time before "battle photography".
The Lithograph is copyright 1862 by the Lithographers - Currier & Ives.
This rare and compelling, 1862 Civil War subject, hand colored, stone lithograph is in very good condition. The colors are bright and vibrant and the sheet is generally very clean and crisp. There are some scattered, light creases but no tears, edge chiping or physical damage of any kind. The period and possibly original, Chip Carved, Folk Art style frame is well preserved and itself a wonderfully collectible Folk Art Frame(overall size of framed display is 19 1/2” by 15 1/2”).
A very rare and attractive, 1862 Currier & Ives hand colored Stone Lithograph of the Civil War Battle of Shiloh and a fantastic addition to any Collection!!!
