1 pg. letter, approx. 5" x 7-3/4", dated at Quincy, Mass., Aug. 8, 1861, from John Quincy Adams to the U.S. Secretary of War (at this time, Simon Cameron).A scarce Civil War autograph letter signed (ALS) of John Quincy Adams II, (1833-1894), son of Charles Frances Adams, and Grandson of President John Quincy Adams; Graduated from Harvard in 1853, studied law and commenced practice in Boston; During the Civil War, served on the Staff of Governor John A. Andrew, with the rank o...f Colonel. Member of the Mass. House of Representatives 1865, 1867, 1870 & 1873; Unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Gov. of Mass. every year from 1867-1871. Good content inquiring about a soldier who had enlisted in Boston way back in 1849, as to whether he is dead or still serving. The letter reads: "Hon. Secretary of WarSir, Simon Ward enlisted in a company of Infantry at Boston in June 5, 1849 or 50, Sargent Bates being the recruiting officer. His family are anxious to know if he is dead or still living. Respectfully, John Q.
